California is a state inextricably linked to the utopian ideals of its early settlers, a lush and bountiful territory home to a sundry of habitats, vegetation, and climates. From the rugged mountains of Alberdt Bierdstadt turn of the century Yosemite, to the rolling vineyards and lyrical coastlines of William Keith’s Northern California, the state is as diverse and far reaching as its innumerable representations. Rocky beaches, deserts, and an abundance of agricultural land are just a few of California’s multitude of complex and interwoven eco-systems. It is no small wonder that a majority of early plein air painters were new arrivals from the Midwest and East, enthralled with the incomparable melange of scenic vistas, and persistent in their attempts to portray this beauty in sweeping, grandiose compositions.
